Well, this was a day I used to think was so far away when I was a teenager… But in the end, we all grow up and time just seems to fly by, doesn’t it? As of this morning, I officially reached level 30 of life.

There were so many things I had hoped to achieve by the time I was 30 years old, just like everyone one. So I thought it would be interesting to run through them and see which ones I managed, which I failed at, and which ones were just so close! And yes, I know this is a pretty typical post for a 30th birthday, but why fix what isn’t broken, right? So, let’s take a look at my “before I’m 30” list and how well I did!

Have A Child, Become A Dad

Well, this one is pretty obvious really, isn’t it? I mean, this is 16-Bit Dad for a reason, after all. I had always wanted to have a daughter, but in the end I hoped I would at least be a father before I was 30. However, that wasn’t as simple as “just” having a child. I wanted to be a proper Dad, with a good job, stable home and a happy life for my child.

Two and a half years ago, my daughter came into this world, and I could not have been happier. The second I saw her, a switch flicked in me and my main focus in life was her. Since then, my job has been going really well, and I’m currently in the more secure and stable role that I have ever been in. On top of that, we’ve been safe and sound in our rental house for 4 years now, and we’re currently in the process of buying our first family home. So, I think I’ve pretty well with this one! My daughter is happy, and she is loved by her mother and I so much…

Buy A House

Well, this one is definitely in the “so close” category… Had everything gone smoothly with the house purchase, we would have been finished 2 weeks ago, and I could have checked this one off the list completely. Unfortunately, it certainly wasn’t that simple (take a look here). Therefore, at the time of writing, we’re waiting for the contracts to exchange. A completion date has been agreed, and we’re supposed to finish the purchase next week… But that is one week after my 30th.

Therefore, I am not sure whether I can count it or not. I mean, I’ve done everything from our end, with just the solicitors’ work left, so it sort of counts. But then, we haven’t completed yet, so it also doesn’t really count. What do you guys think? Was this a success or a near miss?

Go To Comic-Con

I had seriously hoped to go to Comic-Con long before my 30th birthday, but alas, I have still never been! The closest I even came was in 2014, when I had the option to go to Comic-Con or the Final Fantasy XIV Festival. I chose the FFXIV Festival, and I don’t regret it at all, since it hasn’t been in the UK since then.

However, I do wish I’d gone to Comic-Con earlier in my life. But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever go. In fact, I think it could be a great experience for my daughter and I once she’s a bit older. She already shows an interest in games and superheroes, so maybe we could be one of those daddy-daughter duo cosplay teams. That would be pretty damn awesome, right?

Learn Another Culture

This one was something that I always thought would be the most difficult to achieve. However, it ended up being the first one I was successful at. Funny how things work out, isn’t it?

You see, I moved away from the UK when I was just 19. Since then, I’ve moved to a number of different countries, but spend most of my time in Turkey before I came back here to “good ol’ Blighty”. This is because my wife is Turkish, and we lived with her parents for a number of years.

Whilst there, I just naturally picked up so much of their language and culture, from habits to mannerisms. I’m not fluent, and I still tend to do a lot more British mannerisms, but I definitely learnt an awful lot about the Turkish culture. And now, my wife is passing that on to our daughter, whilst I pass on the British side of things.

See Alice Cooper Perform Live

I’ve been a huge Alice Cooper fan seen I was about 10 years old. There was just something about his music that resonated with me, which is strange for a 10 year old, I know. But it just did. I mean, I have every single one of his albums and love every song on them.

So, I had wanted to be able to go and see him perform live for so long. Then, in 2008, I was living in Bulgaria at the time and decided I would go to the Kaliakra Rock Festival. This was a multi-day festival for less than the price of a weekly petrol tank fill up. And who would be the person headlining the festival that? None other than Alice Cooper! He was also supported by the likes of Manowar and In Flames, amongst other bands.

It was an utterly epic couple of days, and I won’t ever forget that performance. There’s just something about seeing Alice Cooper hang himself on stage before his (adult) daughter cuts the rope that sticks in your mind.

And That’s All Folks

Yes, I know it wasn’t the longest of lists, but those were the goals that I wanted to reach before I was 30. Whilst I didn’t manage to achieve them all, I think I did pretty damn well. Meatloaf once sang that “2 out of 3 ain’t bad”, and I did 3 out of 5, with a fourth being (hopefully) just one week late. So yeah, I’m pretty happy with how things worked out.

Do you, or did you, have goals to achieve before your 30th birthday? How are they coming along? Let me know in the comments below!
