And here we are; 2016 is finally over and now we can look forward to what the next 12 months holds for us… And we can hope that those 12 months are better than the last… But anyway, that’s not what I’m here to talk about, is it. Today, we’re going to look at 5 movies that I simply cannot wait to see this year! So, let’s get this list post started, shall we?

1. Ghost In The Shell

One thing that has happened so many times in the past is that a brilliant Japanese movie (be it live action or anime) has been completed and utterly ruined when it gets remade by Hollywood. I’m looking at you, Dragonball Evolution. But you know what? For the first time since the original remake of The Ring (original remake is an odd term) I’m actually excited by this trailer…

I’m concerned as well, though. I’m not 100% sure whether they are just going down the Sci-Fi action movie route with this remake, or whether they are actually going to capture the intrigue and nuance of the plot and franchise as a whole. But, I am really excited to see the movie… I’m just hoping it’s not a huge let down… Oh, and if you haven’t seen the original Ghost In The Shell yet (and why the bloody hell haven’t you) then I cannot recommend it more! The original DVD release is great, but I recommend getting it used from Amazon, rather than new. Or, you could just wait for the Blu-Ray release in March (but why wait for awesomeness?

2. Alien Covenant

Ok, so the Alien franchise had a bit of a falling out with Quality in recent years, but Prometheus was actually a pretty damn good movie! It didn’t feel like an Alien movie, but it was still bloody good. And so, with Covenant actually being part of the titled Alien franchise, and looking at what they were able to do with Prometheus, I actually have high hopes for this movie.

The trailer looks like the franchise is going back to its horror roots after the sack of dog turd that was Alien Versus Predator. However, I am a little worried that it’ll just end up being a generic horror movie with nudity and shower scenes… But there is still hope! Ridley Scott is a genius (most of the time) so here’s to hoping he can fully revitalise an amazing franchise that lost its way!

Oh, and if you haven’t seen the original Alien movies (not including AVP) then you really should! The first and second, especially, remain two of my all time favourite movies!

In fact, the Alien films are all on Amazon Prime Video, along with a load of other awesome films, including the original trilogy of the next franchise in this post; Star Wars! And since you can get a 30 Day Free Trial for Prime, you could actually catch up on these films for free, or at least for dirt cheap if they are not free (we’re talking £2)! Not a bad deal, eh?

3. Star Wars: Episode VIII

Come on, you know this was going to be on here, right? How could it not be? A Force Awakens was an awesome “back to form” showing for the series, and Rogue One (which I haven’t been able to see yet) looks like its going to be awesome. I’m a huge Star Wars fan, evening being able to sit through the Prequels multiple times for family members to see them and get the full backstory.

My favourite of the series so far is still Return of the Jedi (of course it is) but you know what? A Force Awakens is actually second… So, despite nervousness because of the new director, I am really looking forward to Episode VIII! It’s just a shame that it will be the last time we see Carrie Fisher…

And that just put this whole post on a downer. Sorry about that… But I think it’s time to go and rewatch the original trilogy. But anyway, if you missed A Force Awakens, you should definitely pick it up! And the rest of the franchise as well, to be honest! This December is going to be epic (I hope) and you really want to be clued up for it!

4. Blade Runner 2049

You know what? I’m not even worried that Ryan Gosling is in it… You may have noticed that both the first and last movies on this list are both Cyberpunk, and that should be quite telling. I love the genre, and the original Blade Runner is one of the true classics of it. And now, we are getting a sequel to this absolutely epic piece of art, with Harrison Ford reprising his original role! I’m actually not sure which is bigger to me; Star Wars or Blade Runner 2049!

I don’t even see how Ryan Gosling could ruin this movie! I mean, Drive wasn’t too bad and he can definitely create the correct mannerisms for the world of Blade Runner. Plus, with Harrison Ford back as well, Deckard will be keeping him in check! This is something I never thought would happen, so you guys need to go and watch the original if you haven’t seen it (or haven’t seen it for a while).

Honourable Mentions

Whilst those three are by far the movies I am most excited about for 2017, there are a few others that have intrigued me. So here’s a short, bullet pointed list of honourable mentions.

  • Logan
  • Despicable Me 3
  • Kingsman: The Golden Cirlce

And that’s it! Those are the movies I am most excited about, or even just slightly excited about. But what about you? Which movies are you looking forward to this year? Let me know in the comments below!
