Last week we took a look at how you can get started in competitive gaming and eSports (which you can read here). One of the main points that came out of that was the idea of finding one game and sticking with it, perfecting your skills. This makes a huge amount of sense when you want to try and start playing a game competitively.

However, it also brings up another problem you have to face when trying to get into the eSports industry; which game should you devote your time to? So I thought I’d take a look at how you can choose the right eSports game for you, whether you are a player or a spectator.

The eSports Gaming Landscape

As discussed in previous posts, eSports has grown massively over the past few years, both internationally and now in the UK as well. What started off being dominated by MOBA (Massive Online Battle Arena) games like Dota 2 and League of Legends, or specific FPS games like Counter-Strike, has grown to encompass all manner of games! That’s why it has also become so hard to work out what games to focus on for an eSports career, or as an eSports fan.

Slowly but surely, lists are coming out across the internet to answer the question of “what esports are there?” However, the amount of games played competitively is constantly growing. So you really need to ask yourself a number of questions if you want to find the right game for you.

The Burning eSports Questions

So what are these questions you need to ask yourself in order to find the right eSports game? Well, they all designed to help you decide on a genre first. Now, I’m not going to make this into a quiz or anything. There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, after all. They’re just here to get you thinking.

  1. Do you prefer fast-paced games or games with a slower pace but more strategy?
  2. Do you prefer precision aiming or MMORPG style combat?
  3. Would you rather a combat game, fighting game or something more sports related?
  4. If you prefer sports games, would you rather real-world sport or something completely original?

The reason behind these questions is simply because the amount of genres out there is crazy. For example, here’s just a sample of eSports games and their genres;

  • Counter-Strike – First-Person Shooter
  • FIFA 19 – Real-World Sports
  • League of Legends – MOBA (with MMORPG style combat)
  • Starcraft 2 – Real-Time Strategy
  • Rocket League – Vehicle-Based Sports

So yeah, as you can see, there’s a huge amount of different types of game genres available. So you need to choose your preferred genre of game before you then decide upon what game within that genre you’ll play.

Genre Picked, Now What?

Once you’ve managed to decide upon a genre, the next step is to try and work out which game within that genre you’ll want to play. Of course, that’s a huge undertaking because there are just so many of them. In fact, I can’t even list them all because of how many there are!

Luckily, there is already a list on Wikipedia of all current and previous games that are or have been part of the eSports industry. You can read that here!

I would say the only real way to determine which game in your chosen genre is right for you is to try them out and research them. This can be done by getting each of the games, but let’s face it, that’s a lot of financial investment. So another good way would be to hop on over to YouTube and look at gameplay videos of the various games. Specifically, take a look at past eSports broadcasts of those games.

This will give you an idea of what the competition will be like and also a brief idea of what the game is like. Then, when you find one that takes your fancy, you can get that one and try it out. That way, you’re making a more informed decision about where to invest! By doing this, you’ll be able to eventually find the perfect game for your eSports careers.

And That’s All Folks

Those would be my tips on how to find the perfect eSports game for you to play and pour hours upon hours of time into. It’s not a decision to take lightly if you are serious about becoming an eSports professional, so take the time to research and make the right decision!
