On thing most people agree on is that sitting down with a good book is awesome. Whether it’s an audio book from Audible or a paperback in your hands, reading through an amazing story can be really uplifting and a great form of escapism from the stresses of daily life. In fact, that’s partly why I love Science Fiction and Fantasy novels! They not only let you escape real life, but they take you to any entirely new world!

So, on that note, here are some of my all time favourite books that I highly recommend you look into!

1. Leviathan

Leviathan is the first book in the series of the same name by Scott Westerfeld. Set in an alternate history version of Word War 1, it follows the son of the Archduke Ferdinand and also a younger British lady who wants to join the army. With everything from steam-powered mechs to giant flying whales as war ships, this book has everything you need to be taken into an entirely different world! And it doesn’t just gloss over it, instead explaining the history of the world, how things became the way they are and how all of these different fantastical vehicles/animals exist and work.

Of course, there’s a bloody good story in there as well, so I definitely recommend looking this one up! You won’t be disappointed!

2. Children of Hurin

Even with the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies done and dusted, did you know there are loads more stories from middle earth out there? In fact, out of all of them (yes, including Lord of the Rings) Children of Hurin is probably my favourite. It is a lot darker, with an incredibly bleak storyline, but it is so well written and the plot so engrossing that you won’t be able to put it down (a cliche, I know, but true).

You become so invested in the characters and how their lives are changed by a curse, that you just keep flicking through the pages, telling yourself “just one more” over and over! If you’re a fan of middle earth at all, then I cannot recommend this more!

3. Rivers of London

Once referred to as “Harry Potter grows up and joins the cops”, Rivers of London is also the first in a series that follows a beat-cop finding out about magic, learning how to use it and having to foil a serial killer who tears people’s faces off! Now, if that didn’t make you want to read it, I don’t know what will!

Set in London, you get everything you’d want from a crime novel with the added bonus of magic, monsters and amazing writing! The story is fun, exciting, and never takes itself too seriously, despite the seriousness of the plotline. If you’re looking for something unique, quirky and just a bit different from other books out there, then this is definitely the one for you!

And There You Have It

Those are three books that I cannot recommend more. If you want to get your book on this week, then you really should give them a try! They are all available from Amazon through Prime so you can get them in one day with free delivery. And they’re not exactly expensive, so why not give yourself a little treat and read a truly awesome book this week?
