So recently, I had a look at League of Legends for the first time (you can read about that here), so I thought I’d take a look at its biggest competitor; Dota 2. I’ve started to enjoy watching more Massive Online Battle Arena games, although that’s probably a bit late as the Battle Royale genre is overtaking it completely. However, I thought I would let you know what I think about the game so far.

What Is Dota 2?

So let’s get this started by talking about just what is Dota 2, shall we? To begin with, it’s one of the biggest eSports games ever, with a player base that’s absolutely massive, spanning the entire world. It’s made by Valve and is technically a sequel to a mod called Dota, which stands for Defense of the Ancients. The MOBA game helped to define the genre, as well as bringing the genre to the forefront of popularity.

You select a hero, jump into battle and have to face off against other players using a variety of skills. Matches are often incredibly frantic, with a huge amount of action going on. That means that you’ll never get bored! In fact, you’ll find that your attention becomes completely fixed to the game.

How Do I Get Started With Dota 2?

The first thing to know about Dota 2 when you are thinking of giving it a try is that the game is free to play. All you have to do is have a Steam account, install Steam’s desktop app and then search for Dota 2 in the app. From there, click on Play Game and it will install for you. It’s that simple!

This means that there is an abundance of players at different levels of skill. This, in turn, means that you can always find people at the same level as you so that you don’t keep getting killed (as that’s just boring).

What About Watching Dota 2?

Well, that is a pretty simple question to answer, really! The easiest way to watch some truly awesome Dota 2 gameplay is to watch one of the myriads of eSports tournaments on Twitch. These are always streamed live through Twitch, featuring some of the top Dota 2 players in the world. The matches get absolutely insane, with constant action and some truly memorable engagements between the player teams.

By watching these eSports Dota 2 tournaments, you can also get a real understanding of the different skills and abilities that each hero has, as well as some innovative ways to use them to your advantage. After all, whilst practice makes perfect, research (as in, relaxing and watching others play) can help you to hit the ground running.

And That’s All Folks

Overall, getting started with Dota 2 is so incredibly easy that it’s definitely worth you just giving it a try. It may not exactly be your cup of tea, but you won’t know until you try, right? So why not install Steam and see what you think of Dota 2?
