Video games, even after all of these years, still gets negative press. Despite the fact that gaming has become one of the biggest industries in the world, there is still a stigma surrounding it. People still look down upon gaming as a waste of time, but it is so much more than that!
Did you know that gaming can change lives for the better? Today, I wanted to cover two ways in which gaming has improved my life, as well as share with you some stories that the amazing gaming community on Twitter have shared with me.
Getting Me Through Hard Times
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’ve had mental health difficulties over the years. In fact, I wrote an entire article on gaming and mental health that you can read here. But in short, I went through a time where I really struggled with life through depression. I could not handle the real world and everything that was going on it.
There were times when I just wanted “out”, as it were. Many times…
But I managed to get through it because of the games that I had. Engrossing myself in the worlds of those games allowed me to escape the reality that was pushing me to the edge. As I found myself getting invested in the adventures and lives of the various characters I played as, I was able to keep my emotions and mental health in check.
To put it simply, I am still here because I was able to take myself out of reality and dive deep into gaming. It literally saved my life.
Bonding Through Gaming
The second story to tell is a much more recent one. My daughter and I have a very good relationship and always have. However, she’s never really been one to sit still for any length of time, so we hadn’t had a moment in time where we could sit and relax together.
That is until I decided to purchase the Paw Patrol game on the PlayStation 4.
You see, my daughter absolutely adores Paw Patrol, so it seemed like the perfect way to introduce her to the gaming hobby. What I didn’t expect was how things would play out (pun definitely intended).
My daughter didn’t want to actually play the game. She pushed the controller away and then handed it back to me. What she did decide to do, though, was sit down next to me and rest her head on my chest. She sat that way for 2 hours whilst I played the game for her.
Since then, she has been much happier to just sit down with me and chill every now and then. So, gaming actually brought us closer than we already were.
How Gaming Helped Other People
So, those were my two stories about how gaming has changed my life, improving it and allowing me to carry on. However, this sort of thing isn’t just limited to me.
There have been a huge number of people on Twitter who responded to my question about how gaming changed their lives. So, let’s take a look at some of the responses, shall we?
And That’s All Folks
As you can see, there are so many different ways that gaming has been able to change the lives of people for the better. There is so much more to video games that just sitting in front of a TV.
