Okay, so let’s get this out of the way first; I am in an Affiliate relationship with Amazon. However, up until about a month ago, I had not signed up for Amazon Prime, mainly because we have Netflix and NowTV. But, we finally decided to give Prime a go because we are buying more and more stuff from there, and because we wanted more choice in what we can watch.

That, in turn, has given me the change to write up a review of the service. So, here we go!

What Is Prime Or What Do You Get?

I think the best place to start is by explaining what on earth Amazon Prime actually is… Basically, it’s an upgrade to your standard Amazon account that gives you access to music streaming, movie and TV show streaming and free one day delivery for a large amount of products. All in all, it sounds pretty good.

However, the main reason we never touched it in the past is because it costs £79 per year. That is a pretty big sum of money to shell out in one go, and was a bit put off for us.

Now, though, this has been changed and there are three different payment structures that you can choose from.

  1. The first one is, of course, the £79 per year payment. This gives you everything included in Prime, and you only have to pay once per year and then just forget about it. However, it is a lot to pay out in one go.
  2. The second is the £7.99 per month subscription, which also gives you full access to Prime, but ends up slightly more expensive over 12 months. However, it is much more manageable to pay monthly than pay an upfront cost. (We are using this one.)
  3. The final is the £4.99 per month subscription. Now, this is an even more manageable payment, which is great, but it only gives access to Amazon Prime Video. You don’t get the free delivery or the music streaming. That’s why we went for the other monthly subscription.

So, that’s basically what Prime is and what you get. But, is it actually worth it?

Is Prime Worth My Money?

This really depends on what you want to get out of it. Do you order a lot of stuff from Amazon? If you do, then the free one-day delivery can actually end up paying for the subscription cost alone. So in that sense, yes! Or perhaps you looking to expand the amount of TV shows or videos you can watch. In that case, Amazon Prime Video has, literally, thousands of things you can watch. Even if you have Netflix and NowTV like we do, the extra choice that it gives you is crazy!

On the other hand, if you’re planning on using it to stream music, then to be honest, I would use a free Spotify account over Prime. You’ll still need to stream it, and Spotify just does music better than Amazon does.

So, if you are actually going to utilise the free delivery, then you should definitely look into either the yearly payment or the £7.99 per month subscription. It really will pay for itself and then some!

On the other hand, if you just want the movies and TV shows, then don’t bother with the yearly subscription. Go for the £5.99 monthly sub and you’ll be paying the same amount of NowTV’s Entertainment package, and get an utterly nuts amount of stuff to watch.

And finally, as said earlier, if you’re looking for somewhere to stream music and aren’t interested in Prime Video or the delivery, then honestly, don’t bother with it. Just get a Spotify account.

Try It Out First

To finish this post of, I just want to let you know that you should take advantage of the free trial and give it a go. Sign up and take a look through the shows and movies that are on offer, because whilst there are thousands included in Amazon Prime, you will need to “rent” some for a one of payment for each of these rental items.

So you really should use that 30 day free trial to look around and see whether the shows and movies you want are avaiable, or whether you feel the rental price is worth it. Use that 30 days to see how well it works for you.

However, if you aren’t happy with it for whatever reason, make sure you actually cancel your trial. If the 30 days runs out, you will automatically start the paid subscription!

What’s My Opinion?

So far, we’re loving it! Being able to watch Vikings Season 4 is great, and the sheer amount of movies available for both us and our daughter has been great! In fact, there are over 400 shows for kids included in Prime! So even my daughter is spoilt for choice!

We are still keeping Netflix running, but we’ve actually cancelled our NowTV subscription now! So, personally, I highly recommend it! But, as said, I would sign up for the free trial before cancelling other subscriptions. Try it out and make sure it’ll be worth it for you!

And don’t just take my word for it! With Amazon Prime Now finally being available in the UK, you can get a whole bunch of items really quickly! Here’s Rhian Westbury discussing the joy of delivery with Amazon Prime Now!
