Even if you have never been someone who has taken a day off work for any reason, you might face a time in your life when you don’t have a choice and you are taken ill for a long period of time. It could be due to an injury, a chronic illness or a surgical procedure, but you might end up spending a lot of time at home trying to think of things to do and worrying about making money for your family. If you have never had a long period off work before and you are looking for something to do during the time, read on.

Take time for yourself

The most important thing that you can do during your time off work is to take the opportunity to have some time to yourself. You hardly ever get to spend time alone with your thoughts and your interests, and now provides you with the ideal time to do it. You can enjoy the silence and spend it with yourself relaxing and letting yourself refresh your mind. The stress of work can affect people in a lot of ways, so while you are at home you can enjoy working on your stress levels and feeling better on the whole.

Read some books

Books can be a wonderful way to pass the time when you are stuck sitting or lying in bed. If you really want to pass some time you can grab a pile of books and work your way through them over the next few days. Reading a book gives your mind something else to think about other than being stuck at home and you will find that time passes much more quickly than it would if you were simply watching the TV. It keeps your mind active and transports you into a different world which can be great for your mental health during your time at home ill.

Try other procedures

When you are off due to an injury or a procedure, you might want to actually take this opportunity to have more procedures that you either need or you want. It might seem a little counterintuitive however it can be the perfect time to do it because you are already off work. It saves you having to book another block of time off another time for other things. Things like a vasectomy procedure will only take 10 minutes of your day and you will have recovered in a week so it won’t even dent your time!


It is incredibly important to rest and relax when you are off sick. So many of us think we need to be active and up and about, however, this is not the best way to spend your time because you aren’t giving your body the chance it needs to recover. Make sure you don’t overexert yourself during your recovery period and spend lots of time sleeping. Catch up on your favourite Netflix show during this time and take the opportunity to binge a game that you love. Don’t worry about being lazy, just enjoy not having to work for a while!

Get a new hobby

If you are going to be off work for over a month for whatever reason, you might get bored pretty quickly of doing the same thing day in, day out. To spend your time in a more productive way which makes you happy, why not try your hand at a new hobby? Maybe there is something you have always wanted to get into such as playing a musical instrument or sketching and painting. Take your time to really have fun trying new hobbies, and you might just find a great hobby which you can carry on even after you have gone back to work.

Get outside

Fresh air and sunshine can be a huge factor in how swiftly you are able to recover from an illness. To allow you to recover quickly and to be back to normal, you will want to expose yourself to some fresh air now and again. Even if you can’t leave the house for mobility reasons, you can at least get into the garden for a few hours on a sunny day and enjoy the feel of the air and sun on your skin.

Make money elsewhere

Money issues are what stop us from getting the help we need with our health a lot of the time. Money is an important commodity, and when you are rendered unable to earn it, it can be incredibly scary, to say the least. If you want to make yourself some money during your time off sick you can think about starting a blog for money or even doing some freelance work in your industry. If you get into painting and enjoy this, you can also think about selling your artwork on a site such as Etsy which will sort all of the legal stuff out for you so that you don’t need to worry about it.

Don’t panic

It is understandable that you will start to worry once you have been off sick for a few weeks about money. But the thing you need to remember is that you need to focus on getting better, nothing else. It isn’t your fault that you are ill or injured and it isn’t the end of the world. Just focus on getting yourself well again and enjoy the extra time you have with your family during this period.

Get better soon

Do everything you can to get well as soon as you possibly can. Don’t try to run before you can walk, make sure you get enough rest and take the medicine which has been prescribed to you. Think about looking after yourself as much as you can and don’t do anything which could jeopardise your recovery. You are the priority here so take the time out and make sure you do everything you can possibly do to get yourself back up and running and back to work once more.
