You’re probably all sick of hearing about Father’s Day by now… I mean, there are countless bloggers out there who are writing up Father’s Day gift guides (I’ve even done one here). But you know what? Sometimes things just get forgotten, and you end up having to treat yourself to some gifts instead. These things happen, so there’s no point in feeling down about it.

For example, I know I’m not getting anything for Father’s Day this year. So, I decided to treat myself to some movies instead. I’m a huge fan of action and story-driven movies, just like I am when it comes to games (such as Silent Hill 2 or Final Fantasy Tactics). Therefore, there are a total of 5 Blu-Rays from Fox that I’m giving to myself this Father’s Day;

  • The Magnificent Seven
  • Heat
  • The Revenant
  • Kingsman: The Secret Service
  • Deadpool

Why Treat Yourself?

As a Dad, you have to expect that you’ll get forgotten sometimes. It just happens. It isn’t because your family don’t care about you or don’t love you. Everyone has things on their mind, such as school, work or other pressing matters. It’s normal. I mean, how often do we Dads forget things like Mother’s Day or anniversaries? There are jokes and memes about doing just that!

So it should come as no surprise that the tables will turn every now and then.

With that in mind, after the day has come and gone (or beforehand if you know you’re not getting anything, like me), then you can go out and buy a little something for yourself.

Why Those Movies?

As I mentioned earlier, I’m a huge fan of both action movies and story-driven movies, but I also love crime movies as well. Therefore, I have actually seen all five of those movies before, but I enjoyed all of them so much that I’d like to watch them again.

Sure, I could probably find them on a streaming service somewhere, but if there’s anything you should know about me, I enjoy the look of jewel cases on my shelves. I mean, I wouldn’t be collecting boxed retro games if that wasn’t the case, would I? I’d just emulate them. But you see, there is just something that I find attractive about having DVDs, Blu-Rays and game cases all lined up, sorted alphabetically and by type or console. Yes, that may be a bit over the top, but it just looks so good!

So, let’s look at the movies themselves, shall we?

The Magnificent Seven

Based upon the story of the Seven Samurai, The Magnificent Seven is a 2016 western film. t follows a group of seven gunmen who are brought together through various reasons in order to help a village that is being terrorised by thieves and bandits. It’s a pretty generic sounding plot, but that’s only because Seven Samurai has influenced so many other stories and movies. However, the acting is really good, with some big names including Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke. I really enjoyed this movie when I first saw it, so I’m looking forward to watching it again.

Heat

I’ve long been a fan of the crime genre of movies. Sure, there are some very bad movies in the genre, but there are also some great ones as well. An example of this is Heat, the 1995 movie with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer. Advertised as a “cat and mouse” thriller, it lives up to its name with great action scenes and brilliant suspense. I last saw this movie was I was a teenager, so I cannot wait to put it in the PS4 and fire it up once more.

The Revenant

Leonardo DiCaprio has long been one of the best actors out there. In fact, he is one of my all-time favourite actors. So it was about time that he finally got an oscar, right? And what a movie to win one with! The Revenant is one of the best movies I have ever seen, following a man left for dead in the wild after his son is killed, trying to survive and make his way back for revenge. It is a truly gripping movie that will play with your emotions and keep you on edge for the entire duration!

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Widely considered one of the best sleeper-hits ever, Kingsman came out when many were getting tired of the repetitive formula for spy movies. James Bond had become stale once again, so Kingsman’s take on the genre was a breath of fresh air. The storyline was entertaining, comical and yet exhilarating. On top of this, despite the comedy aspect of the movie, the acting was spot on as well. That’s why there was a sequel, and also why this is probably one of the best spy movies of the century so far.

Deadpool

What do I really need to say about Deadpool that hasn’t already been said? It was an insanely huge success due to the comedy and R-rated violence. Ryan Reynolds redeemed himself completely after the awful mess that was Green Lantern but donning the Deadpool suit and giving us one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. It was gory, aggressive, dark and hilarious all at the same time. I haven’t seen the sequel yet, but I will be rewatching this one before I do.

And That’s All Folks

Treating yourself for Father’s Day can be a great idea if your family either forgets or is too busy. Doing this with DVDs or Blu-Ray movies is also a brilliant way to treat yourself without spending through the roof. Fox have some great movies on offer, especially for Father’s Day, so I would definitely recommend treating yourself this way.

Have you ever treated yourself on or after Father’s Day? What did you get for yourself? Let me know in the comments below.
