Have you heard of Patreon before? If yes, then you probably know what it is and have a rough idea where this post is going. If not, then allow me to explain. As a content creator, in this case creating articles and blog posts, I take a lot of pride in the content I put out. Sure, it may not be to the standard of the BBC or IGN, but it’ll get there one day.

Part of that pride also comes in the form of not wanting 16-Bit Dad to stagnate. By that, I mean I don’t ever want you guys to get bored of the content I create, be it retro gaming or parenting. Instead, the content of 16-Bit Dad should always be evolving and growing, giving you more interesting things to digest. Sounds good, right? Well, I hope it does, anyway. You see, whilst 16-Bit Dad has predominantly been a blog, it would be great to expand upon that… And I have a few ideas on how to achieve that… Patreon is a means to that expansion; a way to be able to offer you all bigger and better content.

What Exactly Is Patreon?

In essence, Patreon is a way for content creators of all kinds to be legitimised. You see, there is still a stigma about content creators; this idea that we just sit around doing absolutely nothing and expecting the world in return for it. That simply isn’t the case.

As it stands at the moment, I spend about 30 hours per week working on 16-Bit Dad, on top of my day job and being a father to my daughter. It’s pretty exhausting, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. This is something that I love, and I want to make it better for you guys. Patreon allows content creators to do that through you, the fans/readers/whatever you want to be called. It is a way for you to become part of the content that is created.

Acting like a subscription of sorts, Patreon gives you the ability to “pledge” to the development and growth of your favourite content creators.

Why Are You On Patreon?

16-Bit Dad has a Patreon page, obviously… I wouldn’t be writing this post if it didn’t. But I wanted to clear up a common misconception about Patreon and the people that use it; I am not looking for handouts. I’m not sitting here hoping to get rich from the pledges given by others. Instead, as I mentioned earlier, I want to improve and grow 16-Bit Dad for all of you reading this.

Here’s a little breakdown of my “master plan”;

  • An increased amount of reviews, covering a wider variety of games.
  • Improved (and actually regular) YouTube videos covering retro gaming and parenting topics.
  • A weekly livestream, with the games varying and being chosen by my Patrons.
  • A monthly, live Q&A session through YouTube Live.
  • A monthly, if not bi-weekly, Podcast about old school games.

As you can see, that’s a lot of content… Oh, and it would be on top of the articles and blog posts I am already creating. So there would be a lot more bang for your buck from 16-Bit Dad. Hopefully, that sounds as exciting to you as it does to me.

The issue is, this also means that there is a need for new equipment, new games to be purchased and more running costs added to 16-Bit Dad as a whole. That’s the reason why there is a Patreon page; so that I can get the upgraded or new equipment needed to create all of this extra content goodness for you.

What Are You Asking From Us?

That’s really the biggest question when it comes to thing like Patreon, isn’t it? Really, I’m asking you to become an integral part of 16-Bit Dad; part of a 16-Bit Tribe, if you would? As a part of this tribe, you would get access to a bunch of stuff whilst also allowing 16-Bit Dad to improve. For example;

  • My Patrons get to decide which game I will stream each week through a Patron-only poll.
  • My Patrons get access to behind the scenes details of the blog, as well as any videos or podcasts.
  • One the podcast is up and running, my Patrons would get an exclusive MP3 version of it before the actual release of the podcast.

So, what I am asking of you is to come and join the 16-Bit Dad party, just like Engineer Cid below! You can do that by pledging just $1 per month, as well!

You may have noticed that 16-Bit Dad runs entirely ad-free, and I really want to keep it that way. That’s why Patreon is such a good option! Even that tiny $1 per month works out more than what you can get from using ads on a site anyway. So, in order to keep 16-Bit Dad ad-free whilst also being able to grow the content, I started my Patreon page.

How Do I Join?

The easiest way for you to get access to all of the extra stuff listed above, all you need to do is to pledge at least $1 per month through my Patreon page.  That’s enough to seal you into the 16-Bit Tribe whilst also boosting my ability to create the content that you love (or at least, tolerate).

If that sounds interesting to you, then take a look at my Patreon page itself. From there, you can pledge as much as you want. No matter how much you do pledge, it will help to give access to everything listed above. All you need to do is click on the Patreon logos on this site. You’ll find one in the sidebar and one at the end of every post. In fact, there’s one just 2 paragraphs down!

And That’s All Folks

There you have it. Now you know why I have a Patreon page for 16-Bit Dad. I hope the planned growth of the website (and other forms of media) has you as excited as I am! And I really hope that you want to be a part of it with me.

Together, let’s make 16-Bit Dad awesome and give you guys all of the great content that you deserve!
