Massive Online Battle Arena games really hit their stride a few years back with the release of games like League of Legends and Dota 2 (both of which I have covered in quite a bit of detail on this blog). However, even today, it can be a bit daunting to jump into these games. This is especially true when it comes to knowing what type of character to play and what role you will take in each match. Believe me!

If I hadn’t been experienced in playing MMORPGs (Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games), going on “raids” with other people, then these matches would have been very confusing. Thankfully, I put my knowledge of raid team roles into play, which gave me a head start. However, not everyone will have that to fall back on. That’s why I wanted to put this little article together; hopefully, you’ll find it helpful.

League of Legends Roles

When it comes to League of Legends, the roles you play largely depends on the lanes you are going to go down in a match. Basically, each match field is split into 3 lanes, with tactics and roles being based upon those. As such, the current meta (at the time of writing and research) is as follows;

  • Top Lane
    • Tank / Bruiser
  • Mid Lane
    • APC
  • Bottom Lane
    • Support & ADC
  • Jungle
    • Jungler

So, with that out of the way, you’re probably wondering how to play League of Legends as one of these roles. Well, I will do my best to briefly summarise them.

Tank / Bruiser

Oddly, the Tank and Bruiser role is probably one of the most underestimated in the entire game. However, it can also be a really important one! As with the tank role in an MMORPG, if you are playing as a tank, then you can really soak up the damage, drawing attention to you whilst the rest of your team carry out their own roles. This makes you an integral part of the team’s success. On top of this, you would likely be the only one who can get to the ACD and perform crowd control.

APC

The APC (which stands for Ability Power Carry) is one of the damage dealing roles. If you have ever played an MMORPG, this is sort of like the DPS role in the typical team setup. They are designed to be played on their own, without the need for support, in order to accumulate as much XP as they possibly can. This also means that you have to be able to react and change tactics on the fly, very quickly.

Support & ADC

Also known as “Attack Damage Carry”, ADC is the other DPS (or Damage Per Second) type of role in League of Legends. As a Marksman, your job is to kill the other team’s players as quickly as possible (especially their Marksman). Doing this allows your own team to prevail. However, you need to be very fast with your movement as, typically, you’re going to be very low on defense (or “squishy). Therefore, if you aren’t quick enough, you will likely die very swiftly.

Jungler

Now, the Jungler is by far the most difficult role to explain in League of Legends. Basically, as a Jungler, you are tasked with running between the different Jungle Camps to try and get as much XP as possible. Depending on how well you are able to do that, you can also help the rest of your team to gain a lot of XP. You can also help deal with enemy minions or laners, effectively supporting the team overall.

And That’s All Folks

That was a brief summary and look at the different roles that you can play in League of Legends. Each one plays very differently, so you need to try and figure out what role best suits you and your preferred play style. Hopefully, having these brief descriptions will help you to figure that out.
