E3 2018 has come to a close with the big press conferences all done and dusted. Microsoft’s offering was full of big name games, but most were multi-platform. Sony’s showcase started off a little confusing due to the presentation style but hit the ground running with the second half. Nintendo did their usual video showcase, which a couple of nice surprises… But overall, it is really hard for me to actually declare a winner.

I mean, E3 2015 was decimated by Sony, whilst E3 2017 was definitely Nintendo’s year… E3 2018, however, is all up in the air. Everyone had major positives and serious negatives… As such, rather than try and dissect every minute detail of the press conferences to determine a winner, I’m simply going to list my top 7 moments from E3 2018!

7. Devil May Cry 5 Announced

I’ve been waiting for a new Devil May Cry game ever since Devil May Cry 4, because there never was another Devil May Cry game made (I’m not in denial, you are)!  So, you can imagine how surprised I was to see a brand new Devil May Cry game revealed during the Microsoft press conference. I mean, I would have expected it during the Sony conference rather than Microsoft, since that’s where the series started.

Devil May Cry seems to have the same amount of style and over-the-top action that we have come to expect for the DMC series (ignoring the non-existent reboot). From what I could tell, it is a direct sequel to Devil May Cry 4, with Nero and Dante both making an appearance. If I am right about this, the trailer seemed to focus on Nero more, with Dante appearing on a motorbike towards the end. But either way, it seems like we are back to the real Devil May Cry series and that is reason enough for it to appear on this list of my favourite E3 2018 moments!

6. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Trailer

I have a confession to make when it comes to Assassin’s Creed; I stopped playing the games after the third one. Rather than play Black Flag, I read the novel, and even though I was gifted Syndicate for my birthday one year, I traded it in before even putting the disc in the PlayStation. I had grown weary of the series, and all of the bugs in the more recent (at the time) games put me off even more.

However, Assassin’s Creed Origins piqued my interest again and, whilst I haven’t played it yet (due to price versus available cash), it looked like it was reinvigorating the franchise. Then, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s trailer hit the screen during the Ubisoft’s conference and I was blown away. The ancient Greek setting, along with the connection to the Spartans, really hit a nerve in me. I was in awe of the game straight away, even before the announcement that there was more of an RPG focus in the game now.

So, I can safely say that Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has pulled me back into the hype for the series. Let’s just hope it doesn’t launch in a similar state to Assassin’s Creed Unity…

5. Death Stranding Gameplay

It shouldn’t really be a surprise that Death Stranding made it onto this list of my top E3 2018 moments. After all, we’ve seen nothing but cinematic trailers of the game for years now. No one had any idea of what the game was going to be like, or if it even was a game rather than an interactive movie of sorts. So, whilst we knew that we were going to see more of Death Stranding because of Sony announcing their focus on 4 big games, actual gameplay footage felt like a wish more than a theory.

However, that wish came true. We were treated to a bunch of gameplay footage showing what I assume is a massive open world and some very Survival Horror style elements as well. I’m still not actually sure what type of game Death Stranding is, but at least we now know that it is a game! And boy, does it look amazing, whatever it is!

4. The Last of Us Part 2 Gameplay

Whilst Sony’s start to their showcase may go down in history as being just a bit too out of place for E3, especially with the intermission thing, one thing that you can’t deny is that they started the entire thing off very strong! How, you ask? Well, they hit us all straight in the jugular with a gameplay video of The Last of Us Part 2, showing Ellie battling off a bunch of antagonistic humans using stealth and sheer bloody violence.

The level of detail in the animation of Ellie’s movements and attacks is astonishing. As too was the detail put into the other aspects of the game – for example, at one point in the gameplay trailer, you see a man being murdered by having his intestines cut out of his body. And when I say that you see it happen, I mean you can see his intestines fall out of him, even from the long distance shown in the trailer. That, to me, is a great example of how much effort Naughty Dog are putting into The Last of Us Part 2.

This is going to be an epic game, just like the first, and the reveal of a gameplay trailer was a brilliant moment in Sony’s conflicted E3 2018 presentation.

3. Battletoads Announcement

You may not have realised this, but I had a huge fondness for the older, classic games that are out there. One such game would be Battletoads, or rather the Battletoads series of games back on the Super Nintendo. The titular game itself is infamous for its difficulty, but this challenge made it great. However, it has been a very long time since we got a new Battletoads game. As such, I don’t think anyone could have guessed that we would get an announcement of one during Microsoft’s E3 2018 press conference!

Yet, that is exactly what we got. It started off with some dark humour from a voice over who suddenly shifted tone to that of worry and panic. Then, the title of Battletoads came up on the screen and I jumped out of my seat. This was completely unexpected for me and was a truly great little surprise – even if we only got the name and no actual footage of any kind.

2. The Reaction to Gears Pop

Up until Sony’s awesome surprise reveal of a certain game, this moment was going to be in the number 1 spot simply due to its comical value. For those of you who missed it, the Gears of War logo appeared on the screen during Microsoft’s press conference. This, naturally, sent the entire auditorium into a frenzy of cheers and hysteria. Everyone was incredibly excited about what they were about to see! Or rather, what they would see after a couple of other trailers, as it ended up.

The sound of a chainsaw could be heard, and this made the screams of excitement grow even louder. Then the wall that the Gears of War logo was painted on was busted down. Who stepped out of the rubble? Well, probably not what anyone was expecting. There, on the main stage of Xbox’s conference, was a Pop Figure version of the Gears protagonist. Yes, a Pop Figures version. Thus, the game Gears Pop was revealed…

What had been an auditorium full of elated fans was swiftly overcome with complete silence. It was this reaction of sheer disappointment that made me laugh so much! Now, as mentioned earlier, another trailer was played (Gears Tactics for PC) before they did actually show Gears of War 5. However, that reaction will never get old!

1. Resident Evil 2 Remake Trailer

This year, I came into the E3 press conferences expecting to see a few new games in the same old IPs with nothing particularly special being shown asides from Kingdom Hearts 3 (which was shown over and over). We had our “dreams come true” E3 back in 2015 when they announced Shenmue 3 and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Since then, nothing has really quite come close to the shock value that those announcements gave us. That is, until E3 2018 (in my opinion).

Now, we all knew that some work was being done on Resident Evil 2’s remake. Capcom had confirmed that much already. But we didn’t really know how far along development was, nor what state the game was in at this moment. Then, we were treated to a game trailer following a rat around a pantry of some kind. This was then followed by shouting and an altercation between two men, seen from the eyes of the rat before a storage shelf falls over and kills the rat.

From here, we are shown a zombie eating someone before being shot dead (again) by Leon S. Kennedy. That was the moment my mind blew. In fact, you can see my reaction to it in this video!

As you can see from my reaction, this was a huge deal for me! I had to restrain myself because it was so early in the morning, but I could have screamed! Resident Evil 2 remains my favourite in the series to this day, and I have been waiting to see what the remake would be like. So this game reveal easily takes the number 1 spot for the best moment of E3 2018 for me. On top of that, we even got a release date!

And That’s All Folks

Those were my top 7 favourite moments from E3 2018, coming from a number of different press conferences. Again, I can’t really decide on a definite winner of E3 2018, other than us gamers. There are some amazing looking games on the horizon. So rather than trying to figure out which console won, I say we all just sit back and enjoy what is to come in the world of gaming!
