Technology has come a long way since those humble 8-bit days of the Mega Drive and NES, but that doesn’t mean it’s any better. If you’re reading this blog then you’re clearly the kind of nostalgia gamer that is helping fuel the explosive renaissance of old-school gaming across the world, proving that shinier graphics and more complex controls do not necessarily make for a better gaming experience – and definitely not for better gameplay.
Where this more recent gaming technology does come in handy, however, is when it allows us to re-live our favourite games with ease. A number of the most iconic releases of the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s have now been adapted for contemporary PC gaming, meaning you don’t have to waste time scouring the depths of the internet in order to find a functioning Dreamcast. Here are the best vintage games you can play on your PC in 2018.

Wolfenstein 3D

The classic and enduring Castle Wolfenstein series, in which you hunt down monstrous Nazi experiments in a spooky German castle, wouldn’t be anything without this iconic original title. While it was originally a PC game anyway, copies were exceedingly difficult to find until very recently. But the game developer that owns the series, Bethesda, was generous enough to release a download code for fans, absolutely free. Free download codes for games as good as this are the stuff of legend, and while, from shoot ’em up RPGs to online casino games, bonus codes that work are hard to find, sometimes fortune smiles and gives us gamers a freebie that we didn’t know we needed. On historical merit alone, this is one title you can’t avoid playing this year.

The Legend of Zelda

The Zelda series began with the Nintendo Entertainment System, and has since gone on to spawn literally dozens of spin-offs and sequels across a wide variety of platforms. However, seeing where it all started is an experience not to be missed. Get to know Link all over again by downloading the original Legend of Zelda game for your PC in homebrew form, to re-live what is undoubtedly one of the most influential and important games to ever be released. As always, the fans have delivered on this one, as you can also enjoy the 1999 Zelda experience with added DLCs and bonus items created by tech-savvy fanatics.

Sonic Adventure

It would be a gross injustice to gaming to do a round-up like this and not include everyone’s favourite little blue hedgehog. Sonic defined Sega right from the very beginning, and continues to define gaming culture to this day, having spawned over 100 titles and sold hundreds of millions of games on pretty much every single console you can think of. While it is difficult to pinpoint the definitive, classic Sonic experience, the 1998 Dreamcast title Sonic Adventure is probably as close as you can get to pure perfection. Luckily, the title has been released for PC download, so even the most inexperienced gamer can get to grips with one of the most important releases ever.
